Because why not. Don't think anybody's going to read this anyway. Did it for fun. Extremely objective. Some of these songs I'm not sure about, some I left off either on purpose ("Hotel California") or accidentally (too many to list), some people (if anybody sees this) will agree with, some that will destroy any critical credibility I have.
Note that these are my favorite songs. I'm not saying these are the greatest songs of all time (totally are though). They're just the songs I really, really like. I might eventually add reasons/apologies for the songs I picked, but who knows. I never have the time to do anything here. But for now, let's get started.
NOTE 1: I know some of my picks will contradict the lists I've made. I guess some songs sound better within the context of the year or whatever. I'm just inconsistent.
NOTE 2: "Hotel California" sucks.
NOTE 3: Some of these songs are waaaaay lower than they would have been if I'd thought of them earlier. I swear, half the top 10 would've been ties. Take the lower rankings with a grain of salt. I'm just one person after all.
NOTE 4: These are songs from the era of sound recording onward. I'm also only doing songs meant to be heard independently, so while some of these songs may have been used in movies or musicals, I'm avoiding ones specifically for movies or musicals (maybe "The Blues Are Brewing" is but I don't know).

All right! Here are the first of my progressively more recent look-backs at the Billboard Year-End Hot 100s from milestone years. So, let's go back 50 years to 1966. The pop music paradigm was shifting. Motown was at its peak, the days of corny novelty groups were numbered (though far from over), and psychedelia was slowly starting to take a hold of the pop charts. As far as I can tell. This was all way before my time (obviously). Best I can gather is that pop music was at an unmatchable peak - heck, from about 1964 to 1967, the pop charts were really, really good in a way I haven't seen since. Also, my mom was born in '66, so that's nice. The big hits of 1966 aren't just really good songs, they're all-timers. My list plays out less like an actual year-end best list and more like a parroting of the Rolling Stone 500 Songs list. But I'm here to be honest, and the big hits of 1966 were honestly really good. This also means they've held up, so that's why this list is going to be so glaringly obvious. Anyway, before we hit the list proper, here are some honorable mentions:
  • "You're My Soul and Inspiration" - The Righteous Brothers: Fine song, but it's basically just "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" all over again.
  • "Monday, Monday" - The Mamas and the Papas: We've got a better Mamas and the Papas song on the actual list, but this also shows why they were damn near untouchable at their best.
  • "Nowhere Man" - The Beatles: Couple of Beatles songs made the year-end chart. While I do love this song, the ones that charted weren't really quite good enough for the list. Now, if we were talking '68 and "Hey Jude," however...
  • "Land of 1000 Dances" - Wilson Pickett: Classic soul. Try the Jello Biafra version.
  • "Shapes of Things" - The Yardbirds: It's Eric Clapton. What do you expect?
  • "Reach Out I'll Be There" - The Four Tops: Desperately close to actually making the list, except I kind of despise how catchy the chorus is.
  • "I Fought the Law" - The Bobby Fuller Four: With all due respect to Bobby Fuller, The Clash did a much better version.
  • "Good Lovin'" - The Rascals: Very catchy, but a little too slight for the list.
  • "Walk Away Renee" - The Left Banke: Because nothing gets an actual girl to your side than making it blatantly public in a wildly successful pop song that you want her to be yours. Teenagers.
Now, on to the list!
10. "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" - Stevie Wonder

I am unsubtle and unapologetic in my love of Stevie Wonder. The man's deservedly become a musical icon by conquering soul and funk in the '60s and '70s (the less said about his work in the '80s, the better). Of course, before he hit the happy medium of creative satisfaction and chart success in the '70s, he just made amiable, fun soul music. The key example is "Uptight (Everything's Alright)", a song that isn't nearly as good as his '70s successes but still shows that the man knew his way around a pop song. It's definitely got catchiness working in its favor; between the great horn section, slick bass line, and Wonder's great vocals, this is just as perfect a pop song as you could hope to hear. Fun and energetic without being cloying. It doesn't give much of a hint that this would eventually be the same guy who'd release stuff like Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life, but it already showed that he could make a great song that everyone can enjoy. A lot of musicians that try to reinvent themselves as experimental make their music a lot harder to listen to, but Wonder always knew how to make a good song. It's in his blood. So, while his later stuff is better, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" is joyful, energetic, and full of the musical craftsmanship that made Stevie Wonder a superstar.

9. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - The Supremes

It's never seemed like teen idols have had to fill much of a requirement for sounding good. Their songs are meant to be expendable pop that rests more on the image of the singer than any actual lyrical or musical content. Of course, nowadays, we don't have their hits being made by Motown, and none of the groups nowadays can hold a candle to the Supremes. The '60s harbored more girl groups than your average large country, but reigning supreme were...well, the Supremes (if that stupid talk show host in the video can make that joke, I can). Fifth Harmony only wishes they can craft a hook this good. The guitar work is nothing short of impressive, and while none of the Supremes have fantastic voices (Diana Ross would mature over time), they really sell it. There isn't really a ton to say about that song - a fundamental problem I had in compiling this list, considering these are some of the most famous songs of all time - but it's definitely worth a re-listen.

8. "Summer in the City" - The Lovin' Spoonful

This song is practically the '60s personified. The laid-back lyrics, the keyboard, the overall light, airy feel. I've loved this song for a long time. I think it's because it sets the tone so well - it really feels like you're in NYC on a blisteringly hot day, turning into a warm, slightly breezy night. Like a lot of the songs I've included here, it also works because it's really catchy. You try getting that keyboard line out of your head.

Well, damn. We've gone through three songs already and I've hardly said anything about them. While I'm not questioning my choices at all, I wish I had more to say - they're some of the most critically acclaimed songs of all time. Heck, not even - the other seven are even bigger. Well, let it never be said I can't take a challenge. Let's say something new!
